Unit1: Methods of iterating–week1

Presentation of copied project and first draft of written response.

(Jan 21,2025)

I chose to recreate an animation about breaking and restructuring artefacts, and the tool I used is TouchDesigner.

TouchDesigner is a node-based visual programming language for creating real-time interactive multimedia content. It has many different operators. Simply put, with TouchDesigner, we can input and transform images or data, connect various operators to build networks, integrate with other software, and create diverse outputs.

It‘s biggest feature is the visualized programming nodes, which allow real-time preview and modification This makes it simpler than other programming tools, but it was still challenging for me because I have no programming experience.

To get started, I first used YouTube tutorials to systematically learn about the software, including its functions and basic interface. Then I found a detailed tutorial specific to the animation I wanted to recreate, which was really helpful for me as a beginner.

I chose one artefact for my project. Since I’m not good at modeling and had limited time, I downloaded an existing model online. I then used MeshLab to add point clouds to the model before bringing it into TouchDesigner. The process mainly involves three steps:

  1. Render the model and create the point cloud effect.
  2. Add Red line.
  3. Using operators to create the breaking and restructuring effects. By connecting them with a switch operator and linking it to a keyboard operator, so when i  press “1” on the keyboard, it can trigger the breaking and restructuring.

Despite these preparations, I faced many challenges during the process.

This is my final recreated animation.
