Unit1: Methods of investigating–week3

Final presentations and feedback.

(Oct 15,2024)

Over the past week, I’ve tracked and recorded changes in both the location and condition of items left behind by people.

This week, I continued to track these items and discovered some new ones to document. I then attempted to compile all the information, adding more details and trying to capture them through drawings. I plan to combine photos and drawings, with each item presented on two pages—one for the photo and one for the drawing.

In the lower right corner, I have marked the names of these items and the time spent in the park. At the edge of the page, I recorded the position and status of the item daily.

Chicken packing box,(10.4-10.5)

Drink can&Pen,(10.4-10.5) ;Lid,(10.4-10.13)

Starting on the fifth day, I began making predictions about how the items would change before going to the park and recorded them. If my prediction was correct, I added a happy face; if it was incorrect, I added a sad face.

Wrapping paper,(10.4-10.13)

In fact, I didn’t find this wrapping paper when I visited the park on the seventh day and thought it might have disappeared as well. However, on the eighth day, I discovered that it had simply moved to the grass behind it, at a certain distance from its previous location.

Paper1,(10.4-10.8) ; Paper234,(10.8-10.9)

On the sixth day, I noticed three pieces of paper (new)made from the same material next to the paper under the gym equipment(old one), and I suspected they were all from the same person.

Tissue1,(10.4-10.7)

Tissue2,(10.4-10.5) ; Coffee cup,(10.9-10.13)

Sweet paper,(10.4-10.13)

Cigarette case,(10.4-10.13)

Cookie bag,(10.4)

Summary and reflection:

This week’s work has made me more focused on observing details and expressing them through drawing.

After the tutorial, I realized that I could expand the map further and try to render it in comic form. Whether it is weekly work or tutorials, I have gained a lot of things.

But I also often think, I tried to compensate for the mundanity of the objects through creative expression. Could overemphasis on form obscure the social or environmental significance of the objects I documented? This will motivate me to focus more on the tension between form and content in the future, and how to balance the objective and historical with the subjective and emotional.

Feedback

Based on the feedback you received during your final crit, what’s working well in your studio project?

-There is a sense of smartness and intuition in using the ‘Crocs’ to measure, and in reference to my own personal experience.
-Sense of humor has a very positive response.
-Choice of drawing (scale and space) compensates for mundane subject material. (and how mundane the project is but I so much care)

Based on the feedback you received during your final crit, what’s not working well in your studio project?

-A lack of consistency in the speculation, and the speculation can become an active drawing rather than just written down on the edge of the project.
-Need to make it as a narrative, maybe through the form of a comic book.

How could you develop this project further? Or what did you learn that can help you in your future projects?

Develop:
-Visualize or draw the speculation of objects’ location and shapes.
-Continue investigation and extend the “map”, represented in the form of comic books further. What learnt:
-How to create a systematic and creative system to research and
investigate.
-How to observe and express it. (made me more focused on observing details and expressing them through drawing.)
